EMDR Therapy in Chandler, AZ
You Don’t Have to Stay Stuck in Survival Mode
You've done your best to move forward, but certain experiences still impact your life.
You may have experienced a difficult childhood, a painful relationship situation, medical trauma, a car accident, or a loss that you never fully had the chance to process.
You might find yourself feeling anxious, overwhelmed, emotionally reactive, numb, or constantly on guard, even when you’re not currently in danger. You might even understand intellectually why you feel this way, but finding relief seems to be impossible.
EMDR therapy can help your brain and body process the experiences that still feel unresolved so that you can move forward with greater freedom, confidence, and peace throughout your life.
At Seen Known Loved Therapy, I provide EMDR therapy in Chandler, Arizona for adults experiencing trauma, anxiety, attachment wounds, and distressing life experiences that continue to impact their daily lives.
How Does EMDR Work?
When something overwhelming happens, the brain's natural processing system can become disrupted. Instead of feeling like a memory from the past, the experience continues to show up in the present through emotional triggers, physical reactions, intrusive thoughts, anxiety, or persistent negative beliefs.
During EMDR therapy, we use bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or alternating “buzzers'“ held in both hands) while gently focusing on specific aspects of a distressing memory. This process helps the brain reprocess the experience so it no longer carries the same emotional intensity.
EMDR does not erase the memory, but allows it to become something you can remember without feeling like you're reliving it. EMDR feels like it creates distance from the heightened emotions that were originally connected to the memory, allowing you to live your life more fully.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy approach designed to help people heal from traumatic and distressing experiences. The treatment is evidence-based and well researched to be effective in the treatment of trauma. EMDR helps the brain reprocess memories that have become "stuck," allowing them to be stored in a way that feels less emotionally overwhelming.
Unlike what is commonly experienced in traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to repeatedly tell the story of what happened in detail. Instead, we use bilateral stimulation (such as eye movement, tapping, or using “buzzers”) to stimulate both the left and right side of your brain and body. This allows you to focus on helping your nervous system process experiences that continue to create distress in the present, without having to discuss the traumatic incident over and over again.
EMDR is commonly used to treat:
Trauma and PTSD
Childhood trauma
Anxiety and panic attacks
Relationship wounds and attachment injuries
Negative self-beliefs
Medical trauma
Grief and loss
Distressing life experiences that still feel emotionally charged
Is EMDR Right for Me?
EMDR may be a good fit if:
You still feel stuck despite understanding your struggles intellectually
Certain memories still feel emotionally overwhelming
You experience anxiety, panic, or strong emotional triggers
You notice patterns in relationships that seem like they may be connected to earlier experiences
You struggle with shame, self-criticism, or feelings of not being enough
You've experienced trauma, attachment wounds, or chronic stress
You don't need a PTSD diagnosis for EMDR to be helpful. Many people seek EMDR because they are tired of carrying the emotional weight of experiences that continue to affect their lives.
What Can I Expect During EMDR Therapy?
While many people worry that EMDR means jumping immediately into painful memories, in reality, EMDR is a structured, collaborative process that begins with building safety and emotional stability.
Phase 1: Getting to Know You
We'll explore your history, current challenges, goals, strengths, and the experiences that may be contributing to present-day distress. Together, we'll determine whether EMDR is a good fit for your needs. This part of the process can take some time, and often feels much like traditional talk therapy.
Phase 2: Building Resources and Safety
Before processing difficult memories, we'll develop tools to help you regulate emotions, manage distress, and feel grounded both inside and outside of sessions. Many clients find this phase incredibly valuable on its own, and appreciate the tools they have gained. This phase can also take some time, but it is vital that you feel capable of regulating yourself outside of session before moving into the next phase of reprocessing.
Phase 3–6: Reprocessing
When you're ready, we'll identify specific memories, beliefs, emotions, and body sensations connected to your current struggles. Through EMDR processing, the brain begins integrating these experiences in a healthier way. This part of the process is when we use bilateral stimulation to help the body move through the negative emotions effectively and help you to find relief from the traumatic memories. Clients often notice shifts in perspective, experience emotional relief, and find an ability for greater self-compassion.
Phase 7–8: Closure and Reevaluation
Every EMDR session ends with attention to emotional regulation and grounding. At future sessions, we'll review changes, track progress, and determine what support is needed moving forward.
A Relational Approach to EMDR
At Seen Known Loved Therapy, healing occurs within a safe therapeutic relationship, not just in techniques and tools used in isolation.
My approach integrates EMDR with attachment-focused, emotionally focused, and relational therapy. Together, we'll explore not only what happened to you, but also how those experiences shaped the way you see yourself, connect with others, and move through the world today.
You deserve relief from your symptoms, but even more, you deserve to feel safe, connected, and fully present in your own life.
